Remodeling can be stressful. However, with proper planning, you can substantially minimize the impact to you and your family. Here are some tips to help you with your next project – generally in that order.
The biggest cause of delays are related to out of stock items. Make sure you find a supplier that has what you want well in advance and consider buying and storing it shortly before your project start date. Or ask your supplier if it’s possible for us to will-call (we’ll pick it up for you if it’s within a reasonable drive).
Of all the tasks in a remodeling project, tiling and flooring usually take the longest time because they are the most meticulous process of all and require sufficient settling time. As well, re-routing utilities because they require more invasive procedures like tearing through concrete, walls and / or ceiling. We’ll help you through the entire process so that you get the results you want.
For bathrooms, take the following into account:
- Vanity and counter-top (if you need referrals for places, contact us!). Make sure your supplier has it in stock to avoid delays.
- Tiles and grout – this can be time consuming because there are so many choices. You may find what you like but if it isn’t in stock, that could delay your project so make sure to start your search after selecting your vanity and counter-top. Metal tile trims are a great addition and add a very elegant look to your bath.
- Paint
- Bathtub, if applicable, and shower door
- Sink and shower faucets and handles. For showers, make sure to get a solid brass valve as they’re better quality than plastic. These are installed behind the wall so it’s best to do it right the first time.
- Lighting fixture(s)
- Medicine cabinet
- Ventilation fan
- Mirror(s)
- Smoke alarm
For kitchens, consider the following:
- Appliances! This includes cook-top, oven (or range), ventilation hood, refrigerator, dishwasher, trash compactor, wine fridge, and / or microwave oven. Kitchens are built around appliances so make sure your supplier has everything you want. Specifications are important to ensure proper gas, plumbing and electrical requirements.
- Tiles and grout or other flooring. If you prefer flooring, consider vinyl as they’re more tolerant to water or a type that is waterproof or water resistant. We’ll install anything you want.
- Cabinets and counter-top – again, ask us for referrals if you need help. Glass cabinet doors add an elegant touch.
- Sink / faucet / garbage disposal. Consider an air switch for your disposal to bypass the need for a traditional wall switch for power.
- Lighting – recessed, drop lights, ceiling fan, etc. Not only for the room, but under the cabinet lighting as well.
- Paint
- Smoke alarm
